What is a Study Bible?
Let’s face it, the Bible is not meant to be read on a lazy Sunday afternoon for entertainment. The Bible is God’s Holy Word. It’s the main way that He speaks to us. And it’s the instructions for living a life close to our Heavenly Father. We need to have a solid relationship with God, so that we know how, through our lives, we can bring Him honor and glory.
That means we need to study our Bible if we really want to know what God expects of us. A study Bible brings us more insight, into what is expected, to give us a better understanding of His Holy Word. Just like your Pastor brings you a clearer picture of different passages in the Bible. Well, so does your study Bible.
Study Bibles have all of the Scripture passages, like a regular Bible. However, they contain additional information like notes, in the margins or center, which could be cross-referenced for other Bible passages. Study Bibles also typically include historical context, maps, Bible reading plans, and more.

Remember, a good study Bible is meant to supplement and enhance your understanding of God’s Word. Some good features to look for include a concordance, Scripture references, maps and timelines, and commentaries.
Be careful not to depend solely on the notes and commentaries as those are interpretations by man. Scripture is inerrant and infallible. Which Bible Translation Should I Choose?
The King James Bible (KJV), which is what I have always used. The King James Bible was published in 1611 by order of King James 1 of England. It took 7 years and 47 scholars and theologians to translate the many books of the Bible. The Old Testament was translated from the original Hebrew language. And the New Testament was translated from the original Greek. It was written in modern English at it’s time of writing.
Regardless of your starting point, I’m a huge believer that the KJV is the be all, end all of Bibles. However, I’m not ignorant of the fact that it can be a challenge to read and a supporting study with another version is helpful. With that said, the KJV gets my vote for the Best study Bible for beginners. If you start learning from the original translation, you’ll be a step ahead. Just my 2 cents.
Why are There so Many Choices in Bible Translations?
There are three different approaches to Bible translations. Word-for-Word, otherwise known as Formal Equivalence, is a side-by-side comparison of words, so it leaves little room for error.
Examples of these translations would be:
- King James Version (KJV)
- New King James Bible (NKJV)
- New American Standard Bible (NASB)
- English Standard Version (ESV)
- New English Translation (NET)
Thought-for-Thought translations, also known as Dynamic Equivalence, translates a group of words into the language it’s working with. This is easier to read than word-for-word.
Examples of these translations would be:
- New International Version (NIV)
- Christian Standard Bible (CSB)
- New Living Translation (NLT)
Lastly is Paraphrase Translations, or rewording, which simply aims to make the Bible more understandable.
Examples of these translations would be:
- New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)
- Good News Translation (GNT)
- The Message (MSG)

What is the Most Readable Version of the Bible?
If you’re looking for the Best study Bible for beginners, I think it’s only natural to look for a Bible that is easy or more readable. But the definition of translation is to change into a different form. There is always something missing or lost in the process. We don’t want that. However, each Bible also has its strengths as well as its weaknesses.
As I mentioned earlier, if you’re looking for easy reading, look for a Paraphrasing version, which typically uses more words in order to explain the meaning of the Scriptures. This type of Bible would be used to help you as a commentary rather than an accurate translation of what the text actually says.
With that in mind, I’m not making any Paraphrasing suggestions in my list of best Bibles for women today. We’re looking for help to study, not for easy reading.
